Best & Worst Movies of 2009

It's hard to believe 2009 is coming to an end. Hollywood movies gave us a great run, bringing us some of the best entertainment around, as well as introducing us to a few new ideas (thank goodness!). At the end of each year I always like to reflect on the best & worst movies. Last year I only picked five of each. I don't think I can get away with that this year - there were just so many good movies to love, not to mention so many bad movies to hate. After careful consideration and deep thought (haha), I finally compiled my list. In no particular order I give you my top 10 BEST & WORST movies of 2009.

*WORST*
(It's shameful how many bad movies I've seen over the year)

Fighting

It's almost like they didn't care what they called this piece of crap movie.
"Gee Bob, there's a lot of fighting going on... how 'bout you just call it Fighting?"
Poorly written, horrible acting to the point of ridiculous. Most of the time your eyebrows are raised while thinking "Really? I mean really?!"

Brüno

Yeah um,... save yourself the time and money and just watch the 2 minute trailer. Everything funny about this movie is all right there. In fact clips from the trailer are delivered better and are funnier than in the actual movie. LAMENESS!

Some girlfriends talked me into seeing this movie one night and I thought, "even though it looks dumb, what the hell." Seriously though, WHAT. THE. HELL?!! If you're looking for scary this is NOT the movie to rent. They should really advertise this film as a comedy. That possessed goat was hilarious!

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

If I was a 10 year old boy eating cereal in front of my TV on a Saturday morning I would to'ally love this half-ass movie. I was hoping this movie would rival Transformers, but it missed that mark by A LOT! Basically it was a live action take on the original cheesy and poorly written 80's cartoon. Plus if I'm going to see a movie with Channing Tatum he better take his shirt off. HELLO?!

The Haunting in Connecticut

Sure this movie had a few thrilling and scare factor moments, but in the end the story line was so inconsistent to the point of ridiculous and laughable. They were just trying too hard to be another The Amityville Horror movie. I just couldn't get into it. STU-PID!

The Unborn

"Wake me up when it gets scary."
This movie is a prime example of yet another misleading scare-fest trailer, because in reality there is nothing and I do mean NOTHING scary about this movie. It was simply BOOOORIIIING!

Whiteout

I'll take 'this movie is pretty lame' for $1000, Alex. I mean come on! If you're thinking this film is going to be exciting, thrilling and/or scary, I'm here to tell you you're wrong. It's a pretty slow movie with the dumbest anticlimactic ending. I love Kate Beckinsale though.

Angels & Demons

I really enjoyed the book, but after The Da Vinci Code movie I was kind of done with Mr. (None Believer) Dan Brown. The movie followed the book pretty well over all, but it lacked a certain intrigue that made the book so great. It was just a blah blah blah movie in my book. (pun intended)

Sorry Isla Fisher, even you're adorable, cute personality wasn't enough to make make this movie worth while. It looked cheaply made, it was poorly written and in my opinion it was trying too hard to be stylized as another Sex and the City episode. Just pass.

The Ugly Truth

It's so refreshing to see Katherine Heigl branch out and show her more versatile side to acting. Oh wait, nevermind. Why was this movie rated R again? More importantly why was this movie ever made?! I can get behind predictable, but not predictable AND stupid - that's just not a good combo.

*BEST*

(I fell in love with these movies right away)

Up

This is such an adorable and fun-loving movie. It was a fresh idea (for once), it has lovable characters and the animation was amazing. It was this years Wall-E. A + +!

Star Trek

I'm not usually one for remakes/reboots, but J.J. Abrams certainly out did himself with this one. With an excellent cast, a great script, amazing special effects and a great story to follow, this movie is top notch indeed. I can't wait for the sequel!

The Hangover

This is what you get when you mix jagermeister in a glass of Las Vegas. This movie is hilarious, smart and witty. It has a great cast and some funny-ass guest appearances. I love how the story unfolds and the mess the main characters get into. It's one wild and crazy joy-ride right off the bat.

I wasn't really interested in seeing this movie at first, but I'm so glad I changed my mind because this movie is one hell of a ride! It was cleverly thought out, it had fun characters, a good plot and it was funny as hell! I can't wait to own this movie. I'm telling you, you'll love it.

AWESOME movie!! Go see it immediately if not sooner. (Be prepared for some violence though)

Harry Potter movies just get better and better as the series continues. This one (the 6th in the series of 7 books) was dark and eerie, well written and fun all wrapped into one great movie. I can't wait for the next movie! If you like the Harry Potter movies and haven't seen this one yet, what are you waiting for?!

Paranormal Activity

It only took 10 days to film and it only cost $1500 to make. Now it's grossed over $100 million. This surprise summer blockbuster movie was done very well. It was super scary too without trying too hard or using any blood and gore (which is the best kind of scary movie). It was just a smart concept. The ending will blow you away.

District 9

With all the remakes and reboots this past year it was nice to see Peter Jackson come up with a (semi) fresh idea using fresh new actors. The special effects were outstanding and the story was extremely captivating. Great movie!

Avatar

BRILLIANT! A must see movie on the 3D IMAX screen. James Cameron did it again. I was so intrawlled with the movie that by the end I was planning my next vacation to Pandora. (haha) It hasn't even been out a month and it's already broken IMAX records. I loved this movie!

This movie was extremely entertaining, light and just plain fun. The music, the dancing the sets and the people... everything about this movie was fantastic. It was interesting to see MJ behind the scences as well. The King of Pop will surely be missed.

Must Watch: Second Awesome Teaser Trailer for Inception!

Warner Brothers has finally put out the second teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan's Inception. This already hit theaters last Friday in front of Sherlock Holmes, so a few of you might have already seen it. It looks like a very twisted, unusual plot, that's for sure. It definitely looks interesting. Chris Nolan seems to be giving us more and more of the story plot with each new trailer, but aside from going into someone's dreams, I still don't know what this movie is about. I'm a huge Leo fan and regardless, I'll still be seeing this movie come next year.

A thriller set within the architecture of the mind about a CEO who is involved in a blackmailing scandal.

Inception is both written and directed by acclaimed Oscar nominated British filmmaker Christopher Nolan, or Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight. Nolan previously wrote the scripts for Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight with his brother Jonathan Nolan. Warner Brothers is bringing Inception to theaters everywhere starting on July 16, 2010.

First Official Trailer for Sex and the City 2 - Carrie On Ladies!

Source: Firstshowing

Warner Brothers has debuted the first official trailer for Sex and the City 2 starring are four gorgeous heroines - Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon. This is mainly a movie for the ladies, they even sell it that way with the "Sometimes, you just have to get away with the girls!" line at the end of the trailer. It certainly looks as glamorous and glorified as the first Sex and the City movie. This is a perfect first trailer, as it doesn't give too much away. I like that. I don't need to know everything about the movie before it hits theaters. Fans of the first movie will be seeing this sequel no matter what. I can't wait!

Sex and the City 2 is the follow-up to the first feature film from 2008. That original film was inspired by the phenomenally popular, award-winning HBO series that's based on the writings of Candace Bushnell.

Sex and the City 2 is again both written and directed by showrunner Michael Patrick King, who previously wrote, produced, and directed last year's Sex and the City movie and also worked on the show when it was on HBO. Warner Brothers (who now runs New Line Cinema) will be bringing Sex and the City 2 to theaters everywhere starting on May 28, 2010. Get ready for another box office hit, that's for sure!

At the Movies, 2009

It's hard to believe 2009 is coming to an end. It's been one crazy-fun-wild joy-ride this past year: from bloody horror flicks, to great drama, to action-packed Science Fiction, to hilarious comedies, and let us not forget the 3-D explosion. So many great movies, so little time. This movie montage is the best one I've seen yet. In case you've been living under a rock this past year, here's a look at what you've missed. And for those who frequent the cinema often, enjoy reminiscing some of this years best movies.

2009, you have been very good to us with all your amazing, fantastic, heart pounding, hysterical, thrilling and groundbreaking movies. 2010 definitely has a lot to live up to now. I'm looking forward for next years cinema frenzy though. It will definitely give us a run for our money. BRING IT ON!

Avatar Review

I saw Avatar over the weekend and I have to say I was completely blown away. I was a little afraid the special effects were going to make it look cheesy and fake, but those fears were quickly put to rest after seeing this engrossing and captivating movie. There is not a single frame in Avatar that doesn’t look stunning and authentic: from the heavily military human mining colony to the beautiful planet Pandora (which contains a rare mineral that the humans want), to Pandora’s indigenous Na’vi population who aren’t too happy about the human’s being there.

The scenes depicting the forests and floating mountains of Pandora are truly amazing. The Na’vi and the avatars look incredibly realistic, and the action is exactly the sort of thing audiences have come to expect from writer/director James Cameron. It didn't take me long to fall completely in love with this movie. Even though the movie ran 2 hours and 43 minutes, it didn't feel long at all. I loved every second of it. I wish I was a Na'vi and lived on Pandora.

Cameron is known for setting new standards for high quality cinema with films such as: The Terminator, Aliens (my personal favorite) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. These films are regarded as classics in the science-fiction/action genre. With Avatar Cameron not only sets new standards for the use of computer-generated imagery special effects but also the use of 3D photography. Cameron has made no compromises with Avatar from a technical point-of-view and after over 15 years in the making it's great to see Cameron's hard work pay off. Even though I felt the plot was pretty basic, I still loved this movie and I will definitely see it again in theaters. I strongly recommend seeing this movie in 3D. A-MAZ-ING!

Second Official Trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Source: Firstshowing

Disney has just debut a second full-length trailer for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland last night. This trailer will also be attached to most prints of Avatar this weekend (in 3D as well). The first trailer was well received when it was shown a few months back and if you like that one you'll LOVE this new trailer. Alice in Wonderland stars a heap load of talented actors - Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Stephen Fry, Christopher Lee, Michael Sheen, and Alan Rickman. I was a little worried this movie wouldn't be all that great, but after seeing this trailer those worried thoughts have been put to rest. It looks spectacular! This is definitely one of the movies I'm looking forward to seeing this coming year. Enjoy!

Alice in Wonderland is directed by visionary director Tim Burton, of everything from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure to Beetlejuice to Batman to Edward Scissorhands to Big Fish to Sleepy Hollow to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Sweeney Todd most recently. He's simply brilliant! The screenplay was written by Disney's own Linda Woolverton, of Beauty and the Beast, Homeward Bound, and The Lion King previously. This is based on Lewis Carroll 's beloved series of books that were first published in 1865. Disney is bringing Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland to both digital 3D and 2D theaters everywhere on March 5th, 2010. I can't wait!

New “Clash of the Titans” Trailer

I've come to the conclusion that I am obsessed with this trailer. My BUFFY, Jason and I can not get enough of it. This is exactly how I envisioned the Clash of the Titans remake to look and feel like. It's dark, it's gritty and it has tons more action than the 1981 original. The Kraken looks so bad ass not to mention Medusa. Holy cow, I love it! This new trailer is exactly like the first one we saw a few months back, but with a few more added scenes and dialogue. It looks amazing! This trailer will be linked to Avatar, which comes out this weekend. Clash of the Titans is set for release on March 26, 2010. I can't wait!

**New Flashy Posters**

Source: Moviefone, HeyUGuys & Firstshowing

Surely everyone enjoys sex, and many people also enjoy cities, put those words together and you get Sex and the City. This is one of my all time favorite shows and when I heard they were making it into a movie back in 2008 I definitely had my doubts. Those doubts soon turned into happiness after seeing the movie though. I loved it! They did such a good job bringing the hit series to the silver screen. I'm certainly excited for the return of our heroines - Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. The marketing for the sequel has begun as Moviefone has the first glitzy teaser poster for Sex and the City 2 featuring Sarah Jessica Parker strutting her stuff in the midst of bright glittering lights. I love it! Carrie On, Ladies!

First Awesome New Poster & Photo Debuted for Tron Legacy!

Along with the early test footage for Tron Legacy living up to the hype from Comic-Con the year before, everything being released for this sequel continues to tease to the maximum. We can add some more fuel to this out of control fire now as the UK based site HeyUGuys got a hold of a killer new poster as well as the first official production still from the film featuring Olivia Wilde and Garret Hedlund in our first look at the new light suits. I can't believe that we have to wait a whole year to see this.

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and is pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years.

Tron Legacy is directed by first-time filmmaker Joseph Kosinski. The screenplay was co-written by Adam Horowitz ("Lost"), Richard Jefferies (Blood Tide, Living Hell), Edward Kitsis ("Lost"), and the director of the original movie, Steven Lisberger. This first got the greenlight last year because of this early Tron Legacy Teaser played well at Comic-Con. Disney is bringing Tron Legacy to theaters in 3D starting on December 17, 2010.

I have no doubt these movie will do very well at the box office. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing them both.

First Teaser Trailer to Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Source: Trailer Addict

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray this Tuesday. Along with the movie comes an early sneak peek look into behind the scenes of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. I have always been a fan of this series. The last HP6 was so amazing to me. The films seriously get more and more interesting, darker and creepier as the the story continues. Even though this next film has 11 months until its release date I was still really excited about this clip. Enjoy!

Voldemort's power is growing. He now has control over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to finish Dumbledore's work and find the rest of the Horcruxes to defeat Voldemort.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is again directed by British filmmaker David Yates, of Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince previously. The script was also written again by Steve Kloves, of Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, and also Half-Blood Prince, but not Order of the Phoenix. This is based on J.K. Rowling's very popular book series which have already concluded. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part I will arrive in theaters on November 19, 2010.

Behind the Scenes of Avatar

Source: Firstshowing

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I'm a little hesitant when it comes to Avatar. I fear with all the special effects the film will appear cartoony and fake. I am a huge fan of James Cameron's work though, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. This featurette spotlights some side-by-side comparison shots between the final rendered look of Neytiri and actress Zoe Saldana acting out her scenes on the sound stage. It's mind-blowing how much hard work goes on behind the scenes of movie making. That part has always been very interesting to me. It's just incredible how far movies, not to mention technology have come over the years. It's all extremely fascinating! If this movie sparks your interest I suggest watching this ten minute featurette. It's pretty cool. Have a look.

Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine on the planet Pandora who, as an Avatar - a human mind in an alien body - finds himself in a desperate fight for his survival and that of the indigenous beings called Na'vi.

Avatar is both written and directed by Oscar winning visionary filmmaker James Cameron, of The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Titanic previously. He has been developing the technology to make this movie for the last 10 years. 20th Century Fox is bringing James Cameron's Avatar to both IMAX and regular theaters in 3D around the world on December 18th.

I'm going to see this movie in theaters, will you?...

Nine Gets One Final Theatrical Trailer

Source: Apple & Firstshowing.net

The Weinstein Company has released its final trailer for Rob Marshall's Nine. This is a film derived from the Italian play by Mario Fratti which was inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film . This final trailer gives us a little more insight as to what the movie is about. Weather or not this film is Oscar bait, I'm certainly looking forward to seeing this film. I can't wait!

Famous Italian director Guido Contini struggles to find harmony in his professional and personal lives, as he engages in dramatic relationships with his wife, his mistress, his muse, his agent, and even his mother.

Nine is directed by Rob Marshall, of the Oscar winning musical Chicago previously as well as Memoirs of a Geisha most recently. The Weinstein Company will debut Nine in theaters everywhere on Christmas Day, December 25th.
