Top 10 Favorite Childhood 'Sci-Fi' Movies from the 80's

Source: IMDb

Oh, how I love the 80's! A while back I compiled a list of my all-time favorite childhood Fantasy films,  but this time around we're loving all things sci-fi! - my favorite childhood sci-fi flicks from the 80's to be exact.  These are movies I absolutely 'loved' as a kid (and still do to this day). Their unique ability to whisk me away to a more simple and carefree time, filled with mad intrigue and dashing adventure, is exactly why they hold a soft spot in my heart forever and for always.
The 80's were 'definitely' an outrageous decade of spectacle proportions. And with special-effects improving at an alarming rate, it was a rad time for both viewers and filmmakers alike who wanted to explore the wonderful world of  make-believe.  There are a few decades in film history that are better than the 80's. Children of this era never had it so good! So sit back, wax nostalgia and let the good times roll.  Bear in mind, these are sci-fi films I was obsessed with as a kid - some I didn't get into until much later in life (aka E.T., hence the honorable mention).

Honorable Mentions:
TRON
(1982)

Cocoon
(1985)
Short Circuit (1986)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

10. My Stepmother Is an Alien (1988)

Sure, it didn't win any kind of awards, but it didn't have to to be a winner in my book. I remember wanting every stellar outfit Kim Basinger had in this film. Watching this movie with my dad is one of my fondest memories. It may not work for everyone, and if you were to watch it now you'd notice how hokey and overdone it was.  But for a young girl this movie was everything!

9. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)

The feelings that rush over me when I think of this movie are beyond delightful. If you were a child of this era there's no way you missed this Disney gem! This timeless tale made you want to eat a cookie the size a house, play in giant size legos, zoom rapidly by on top of a bumblebee, and lest we forget the tears that were shed when poor, sweet Antie died. With my wild imagination, this comedy had me hooked like no other!

8. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)

This excellent adventure had me like..."Whoa." I can't fully express in words how much I truly loved this movie growing up! Sure, it required a suspension of disbelief as we venture through time, plucking out historical figures all in the name of a class project, but hey, we're down with that! Not only do we have most triumphant one-liners, mingled with bodacious music, but we also have a profound message - "Be excellent to each other..."

7. Flash Gordon (1980)

Despite being a flop in the U.S., as a kid this movie had me at "GO FLASH GO!"  I mean how can you go wrong with "The Savior of the Universe?!" We're talking good vs. evil, beautiful damsels in distress, outrageous/sexy costumes (that pink dress was 'everything'!), fight scenes, explosions, wild creatures. Sold! And lest we forget the stellar soundtrack by one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Queen. It is widely considered by geek culture as one of the greatest sci-fi Cult classics ever made.

6. Spaceballs (1987)

It didn't take long for Mel Brooks to spoof one of the greatest Trilogies of all time. This over-the-top Star Wars parody was so clever and witty it had everyone of all ages cheering for more.  As a child I remember laughing so hard tears were pouring out by the buckets.  It was a blast to quote this movie with family and friends - "When will then be now?"  Being a huge Star Wars fan this light and ridiculously silly movie grabbed a hold of tightly and never let go.

5. Back to the Future (1985)

This movie was basically a love letter to the 50's. Perhaps it's what initially spawned my love for the  charming decade. It even could be considered a love letter to the 80's as well (another favorite decade of mine... clearly). As a kid I loved this movie so much (and still do to this day). Time travel, excellent one-liners, mingled with some rad music and clothing. It's easy to see why I fell hard for this groundbreaking, popcorn flick.

4. Ghostbusters (1984)

Whenever I was home sick from school this movie was always my go-to.  I would pop it in the ol’ VCR, fast forward past that scary ghost/librarian scene #nightmares and laugh like crazy! This classic works, not only because of its paranormal laser light show, but for all the subtle, comedic iterations behind all of it. I credit my love for Bill freakin' Murray to this flick.  Every line he utters is straight up hilarious.  So many fond memories encapsulated in this sci-fi gem. On a scale of one to even... I can't.

3. Flight of the Navigator (1986)

Flight of the Navigator is essentially two movies mashed into one - a suspenseful, sci-fi thriller and a BFF road trip comedy. And I contribute my love for the Beach Boys to this sci-fi treasure. "Round, round, get around, I get around!" Those who grew up in the 80's should have fun, fond memories of this awesomeness. Whenever I think of this movie nostalgia washes over me like a warm shower of bliss.  It's a better film than it has any right to be, but who cares.  It worked so well that to this day I still utterly adore it.  And any chance I get to watch it... I'm all in.

2. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

You love Darth Vader, right? Well, he’s only in a handful of scenes in Star Wars, but in the Sequel, he’s on it. He’s killing Imperial Officers left and right. He gets down and dirty both on Hoth and Cloud City. He even gets his own theme music courtesy of John Williams. Cue The Imperial March. And don't even get me started on the Han and Leah romance... (sigh).  I 'so' wanted to be her growing up.

1. Return of the Jedi (1983)

No matter if you loved or hated Return of the Jedi, you're right. But for me and as a kid this golden treasure was definitely my favorite in this brilliant space opera Trilogy, in large part due to those cute and cuddly Ewoks! And I never wanted to be Princess Leah more than in this movie (ahem, you know what I'm talking about). We have so much adventure lurking around each and every corner -  Jabba the Hut, Vader, speed racers, a joyous grand finale. Love, love and LOVE!
